griechisch Lemesọs, Stadt an der Südküste von Zypern, 154 400 Einwohner; Haupthafen der Insel (1974 Inbetriebnahme des neuen Hafens), außerdem wichtiger Industriestandort mit Schuh-, Textil-, Möbel-, Konserven-, Baustoffindustrie und Weinkellereien; Fremdenverkehr.
 
 
Das Kastell geht auf byzantinische Zeit zurück (die große gotische Halle wurde im 14. Jahrhundert erbaut, später Umbauten der Johanniter) und ist jetzt Museum mittelalterlicher zyprischer Kunst; ferner in Limassol archäologisches Museum (v. a. Funde von Amathus und Kurion). - Westlich von Limassol liegen die (als Templerburg gegründete) Johanniterburg Kolossi (erhalten nur der Donjon von 1454) und die Reste der antiken Stadt Kurion.
 
 
Limassol entstand zur Kreuzfahrerzeit und entwickelte sich zur Nachfolgesiedlung des rd. 8 km weiter östlich gelegenen antiken Amathus, das noch in christlicher Zeit bestand, aber im 12. Jahrhundert zerstört wurde.
